Our Sunderland

Our Sunderland

Starting here. Growing from here.

GOOD/DAY begins in Sunderland.

Not because it is simply where we happen to be based, but because we believe where a business starts should matter.

This city is where we are building our first relationships, testing our model, meeting the people and organisations who will help shape it, and learning what GOOD/DAY needs to become.

Our ambition is to create something that can grow beyond Sunderland without losing the principles it learned here.

Start local. Build well. Grow responsibly.

A business should belong somewhere.

It is easy for a modern consumer brand to exist almost nowhere.

Products can be manufactured in one place, stored in another, sold through a website somewhere else, and shipped without the customer ever knowing who made them or where the value went.

GOOD/DAY wants to take a more grounded approach.

We want Sunderland to be visible in the way the business develops.

That means building relationships locally where we can, creating opportunities close to home, and asking a simple question as we grow:

How much of the value created here can remain here?

Sunderland first. North East next.

When commercially practical, GOOD/DAY intends to look locally before looking farther away.

That may mean working with:

local makers and manufacturers;
North East suppliers;
independent businesses;
artists and designers;
community organisations;
venues;
delivery partners;
tradespeople;
and people looking for meaningful work.

Local will not always mean possible.

Quality, safety, cost and commercial sustainability still matter.

But when two options work equally well, we want proximity to count for something.

Because a pound spent locally can do more than purchase a service.

It can become wages.
Another local purchase.
A commission.
A new customer.
A future opportunity.

More than a shop.

GOOD/DAY was never intended to become simply a place where products sit on shelves.

As the business develops, we want our Sunderland presence to become a place where commerce and community meet.

That might include refill and reuse, local product collaborations, small makers, creative workshops, community tables, repair and circular-economy events, watch parties, seasonal gatherings, skill sharing, artist-led evenings, and occasions that give people another reason to spend time together locally.

Some ideas will work.
Some will change.
Some will disappear entirely.

The point is not to manufacture community around a brand.

It is to build a business capable of participating meaningfully in the community that already exists.

SITE 01: Sunderland

Sunderland is SITE 01.

Our first operating ground.
Our first community partnerships.
Our first customers.
Our first opportunity to prove that the GOOD/DAY model works outside of a presentation or business plan.

What we learn here will influence everything that follows.

If GOOD/DAY eventually grows into other cities, the intention is not simply to copy and paste Sunderland somewhere else.

Each place should have its own relationships, needs, character and opportunities.

The model can travel.
The community should remain local.

Local value matters.

GOOD/DAY’s impact is not limited to the Essentials Pool.

We also care about the wider economic footprint of the company.

As we grow, we want to understand questions such as:

How much do we spend with Sunderland and North East businesses?
How many local people do we employ?
How much work do we commission locally?
How many local makers and organisations participate in GOOD/DAY?
How much economic activity generated by the company circulates back through the region?

We are developing ways to measure that rather than treating “local” as a branding word.

Because supporting a place should mean more than printing its name on a label.

Created with, not simply for.

GOOD/DAY will continue to evolve through conversation.

Customers will tell us what works.
Community partners will tell us what is actually needed.
Suppliers will tell us what is commercially realistic.
Residents will notice things we missed.

That feedback matters.

We do not expect to arrive with every answer.
We expect to build, listen, measure and improve.

From Sunderland, with purpose.

GOOD/DAY may one day operate far beyond the North East.

We hope it does.

But growth should not require becoming detached from where the company began.

Sunderland is part of GOOD/DAY’s story because it is where the model becomes real.

Where products meet people.
Where intentions become outcomes.
Where we find out whether a different kind of consumer business can actually work.

GOOD/DAY starts here.
